If you want to do something really, really nice for your family this holiday season, go see A Christmas Carol at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival Theater in Montgomery. We attended the season opener on Friday evening, and the entire ASF experience was wonderful.

The costuming is exquisite and the gorgeous scenery, backdrops and stage settings completely mesmerize.

Geoffrey Sherman is ASF’s producing artistic director, and his wonderful adaptation of Charles Dickens’ opus relates the story with pathos and humor. Wynn Harmon as Dickens is magical in every sense of the word. He adroitly intersperses feats of prestidigitation with his narrative of the story that completely draws in the audience. He is fascinating to watch as he gestures, conjures up scenes and characters and visibly weaves his tale before our very eyes.

Anniston’s own Rodney Clark is superb as the irascible Ebenezer Scrooge. Initially, you hate him for his meanness, but he wins you over in the end, just as he is won over.

The entire cast is marvelous and professional. Add in amazing scene changes from a skillful backstage crew, visual and sound effects with a wonderful story, and you have the perfect Christmas-time family outing to build a cherished family tradition.
