I’m of many minds about Thursday’s news that Jameis Winston won’t be charged after an investigation into a complaint of sexual battery.

My daughter turns 4 later this month, and I hope she never experiences the horrors of rape and double horror of rape without justice. I raise her to avoid poor decisions that increase her vulnerability.

I hope my 7-year-old son never experiences the horror of a false rape accusation and double horror of never quite proving his innocence. I raise him to avoid poor decisions that increase his vulnerability.

I also know that young people are more likely to let impulse overrule upbringing, so I pray … a lot.

The journalist in me wants truth, but fairness and responsibility command me to treat as fact only what is established as fact.

The sports journalist in me knows well how much society values sports. That fact of life helps me feed my family but also leads to gross and even tragic losses of perspective.

Then again, I’m wary of partisans and crusaders. They fall easily to stereotypes and conspiracy theories, so I try to thwart the tempting crutch of ubercynicism with an open mind.

As a Heisman Trophy voter, I appreciate resolution of an off-field matter, so that I have the most complete facts possible when I vote Sunday or Monday.

The rest of me can fill in blanks with opinions, but only facts belong in this space … and on my Heisman ballot.
