Jacksonville State will bring another former Gulf South Conference rival to JSU Stadium next season when it hosts West Alabama in a game scheduled for Sept. 20, 2014.

The teams haven’t played since the next-to-last regular-season game in JSU’s run to the 1992 Division II national championship. The Gamecocks won the last seven meetings and lead the series 32-10-1.

“We’re happy to be playing JSU for our players and fans,” West Alabama athletics director Stan Williamson said. “It should be an exciting game.”

The Tigers, who recently hired Brett Gilliland as their new coach, are the reigning GSC co-champions. They led the conference in almost every major statistical category and will return quarterback Kyle Caldwell, the 2013 GSC Offensive Player of the Year.

The Gamecocks beat GSC co-champ North Alabama this past season 24-21 in double overtime.

That same night, West Alabama took McNeese State to the wire, losing 44-42 on a fourth-down touchdown pass with 45 seconds left. The Gamecocks beat McNeese 31-10 in the second round of the FCS Playoffs.

Based on contracts and media reports, the Gamecocks now need to find one game to complete their 2014 schedule.

They are contracted to open the season at Michigan State Aug. 30. They are reported to be Chattanooga’s home opener, presumably Sept. 6, although JSU officials have said no contract has been signed. The Mocs are said to already be gathering film on the Gamecocks in the run-up to the game.

Those three games leave JSU to decide whether to make the remaining game a big-money guarantee to help pay bills or a more desirable sixth home game.
