The Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama is looking for volunteers to be nominated for the Juliette P. Doster Award.

The award is given annually to an individual, team, or organization that has done health-care related volunteer work in Calhoun County, according to Susan Williamson, the vice president of advancement for the foundation.

The winner will receive a $1,000 grant, courtesy of the Susie Parker Stringfellow Health Fund, which will be donated to the nonprofit group of the recipient’s choice. The nomination committee will accept candidates until Jan. 3, and officials will present the award sometime next year.

“We know there are volunteers out there sharing their gifts, and we want people in Calhoun County to nominate them so we can acknowledge them,” Williamson said.

The award was named after Juliette P. Doster because she has been an instrumental figure in advancing health in Calhoun County, Williamson said. Doster served as both a board member and chair for the Stringfellow Memorial Hospital trust fund, and established the first hospice program in the county, she said.

“She volunteered her time reading and tutoring children, and that became a comprehensive vision planning program for Randolph Park Elementary School,” Williamson said. “Each one of the winners have carried on and emulated her passion for health care.”

Williamson said the committee will look for those who have put a lot of time and effort into promoting health or people who perform direct, hands-on, medical-related services.

Eligible candidates include individuals, clubs, classes, teams or groups who have given up free time to improve community health.
