Driving down Quintard Avenue was a feast for the eyes as it is every year with the wonderful Christmas lights lined up. They are better than what I have seen in other towns.

Oxford is still exploding with new stores and restaurants. The beautiful mountains in the background, especially the silhouette of Mount Cheaha, reminds me of the Smokies. A ride on the almost-completed Veterans Memorial Parkway surrounded by an extraordinary landscape is a thrill.

The new botanical gardens at the Anniston Museum of Natural History are a good way to spend some quality off-time. Maybe we could see an ice-skating rink in the future. That would be the icing on the cake.

The weather in the Midwest and other states has been an arctic misery, and still is. Our weather here has been acceptable and has the right kind of mix, at least in the winter.

My wish for the new year is less violence and more life and peace all around. I also hope that the unemployment benefits will be reinstated in 2014 for people who depend on them. Our government needs to make cuts in other areas on things that are not as important. I also hope that a wage increase comes through in the new year. No more government shutdowns, please.

By the way, I feel pretty lucky to be an Anniston resident.
