I am a conservative Christian and cannot stand Duck Dynasty. I think it is silly. Here it is necessary to define a word that is often thrown around like so many cheap Mardi Gras trinkets in the Robertsons’ home state — bigot, which is a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc.; a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group (such as a racial or religious group).
What we have is a man being interviewed by a reporter who writes for a well-known magazine. The reporter asked the man what his religious views were on a contentious social issue. The man responded, albeit in a shockingly inarticulate manner for a man holding a master’s degree in education. The man’s opinions, based on his personal religious beliefs, were in line with the conservative Christian views of millions, if not billions, of people.
A powerful lobbying group, known for pushing a narrow and specific agenda, took umbrage at the man’s religious views, even though the man did not express hatred to any group or advocate impacting anyone’s choice or rights. This lobbying group contacted the man’s employer and demanded he be fired because it feels his religious views are not “tolerant” enough, and the group cannot tolerate that. The man’s employer suspended him for his religious beliefs and opinion.
Remember the definition of bigot. So, I ask you, who are the bigots in this scenario, and who are the tolerant ones?
