The Anniston Star welcomes new advertising director

David Bragg wants to do more than sell advertising to local businesses, he says. He wants to meet their needs.

Bragg began Dec. 16 as multimedia advertising director at Consolidated Publishing, which publishes The Anniston Star.

"You have to get outside the stereotype of salesmen and be marketing consultants ... it's all about needs-based selling," Bragg said. "You interview the client, then see how you can resolve their issues with one of your products to make them more successful in their business."

Bragg, 58, was born and raised in Douglasville, Ga., and spent his entire career in marketing and advertising. For 15 of those years he has worked for newspapers, mainly as the director of regional advertising for the Newspapers of West Georgia. However, for six months prior to coming to Anniston, Bragg oversaw advertising for the Baltimore Sun.

"I worked there for six months and I was ready to go back to the South," Bragg said with a laugh. "I love Anniston — it's my new home town."

Robert Jackson, vice president of sales and operations for Consolidated Publishing, said he's excited about Bragg and the experience he brings to the company.

"He's going to be our Nick Saban," Jackson said. "That's our level of expectation we have based off what he's done for the Newspapers of West Georgia."

Jackson said Bragg routinely outperformed the market in Georgia in terms of advertising sales even during the recession.

"His background, his enthusiasm and strong talent for sales management makes him a great fit for our company and where we're going," Jackson said.

Bragg said he plans to increase focus on Internet advertising sales and has already made changes in the ad department, such as requiring his staff to sell both magazine and newspaper ads, not one or the other.

"We want to marry the two products together," Bragg said. "It's matching the client with their target market."

Bragg said he is ready to reach out to as many new clients as possible to discuss potential marketing ideas.

"I'm excited to talk to anyone about any form of advertising," Bragg said.
