In The Star

Jan. 20, 1939, in The Star: More than 200 people from all parts of Calhoun County gathered at Alexandria High School last night to honor members of the 1938 football squad and to see pictures of the Pacific Coast football game between the University of Alabama and Southern California. Because Coach Frank Thomas, Alabama mentor, was ailing with another attack of arthritis, his two chief assistants, “Bear” Bryant and “Happy” Campbell, attended the banquet instead and screened the pictures. Bryant was introduced to the crowd, one of the largest ever to attend an Alexandria school function, by Chester C. Dillon, athletics director of Jacksonville State Teachers College, while Campbell received an introduction from C. J. Allen, superintendent of county schools. Also this date: A 15-year-old mountain mother was in Talladega County Jail today, charged with the murder of her 18-year-old husband. Her original story had at first seemed plausible, that she accidentally discharged a shotgun while handing it to him, but authorities developed doubts and arrested the young widow immediately after the funeral of her young husband. The couple made their home in a remote mountain cabin 15 miles northeast of Talladega.

Jan. 20, 1989, in The Star: Anniston city school officials have taken their first step to meet a state requirement that students be identified with Social Security numbers by the start of school next year. First-graders must have a Social Security number when starting school next fall. Also this date: A child dies at the hand of crazed gun woman who walks into a suburban Chicago school and opens fire. Five California children are killed when a 26-year-old former student drops by his old elementary school playground and starts shooting. As horrifying as these incidents are, they are hardly preventable, area school officials say. Mike Ward, president of White Plains PTO and the parent of two school children, says the value of security guards could be debated. ''But I don't feel there's a need for one. I hope not. 'Anytime you hear something like that (the Stockton shootings) it hits close to home because you think 'that could have been my little girl on the playground.' But you just have to hope and pray it never does happen to your part of the world. … It's sad to think you would need a security officer. But the day may come when we will need them in all the schools.”
