HOBSON CITY – Town Council members on Monday heard the town may be losing out on money from unpaid fees, according to mayor Alberta McCrory. She discussed with the council the need to inform residents that any contractors working on homes or businesses in the town must have a permit to do so.

Letters will be mailed out to residents informing them of the need to hire only permitted workers, McCrory said. Business owners can apply for the right to work in Hobson City at Town Hall.

The next council meeting is scheduled for Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

In other business, the council:

— Reviewed a draft of a new policy manual for municipal employees, and made several suggestions for changes regarding paid time off. Several council members suggested employees be allowed three paid days off in the event of a death in the family, instead of one day as the draft read. The council also suggested employees receive three paid sick days a year, and that workers would not be paid for any unused sick days.

The current manual lacks detail, and hasn’t been modified in more than a decade, town officials have said.

“Take those home, make some notes and bring them back,” McCrory told council members. “We’re going to get this done as soon as possible.”

Once Council members make their recommendations, town attorney Jake Mathews will make the needed changes prior to the manual coming before the council for a final vote, McCrory said.

— Approved $3,875 for a new traffic light pole, which was damaged by an unknown driver in early January.

— Renewed a $1,500 annual workers compensation insurance policy for the town.
