Deputies say a woman released from the Calhoun County Jail on Friday punched, choked and spanked her boyfriend’s 5-year-old son with a belt in December.

Jessica Joy Baxter, 31, of Anniston, faces a charge of child abuse, a felony, according to deputies and prosecutors with the Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office.

According to Lt. Jon Garlick with the Sheriff’s Office, the abuse took place in a home on the 6000 block of Gallatin Drive, where Baxter had been living with her boyfriend and five children. Garlick said he did not know whether the other children were the boyfriend’s or Baxter’s.

According to the lieutenant, a Department of Human Resources worker and the victim’s father reported the abuse to deputies in January. Garlick said the victim’s father is not a suspect in the case.

According to Garlick, the Calhoun Cleburne Children’s Center interviewed the other children, ages 8 to 15. Garlick said deputies do not know the results of those interviews, but said the children had been placed in foster care.

Baxter turned herself in at the Calhoun County Jail on Friday and was released on a $15,000 bond later that day, according to Garlick. She is to appear in court on Feb. 27.
