May 16, 1934, in The Star: Again, this issue of the newspaper is missing from the microfilm record. It is hoped this will be the last such gap for a while.

May 16, 1984, in The Star: Tales of financial hardship are being told around Roanoke these days as the Palm Beach clothing plant winds down to dormancy. Put on line in 1939, the plant for generations has meant close-to-home work for thousands of women. The facility's most recent peak years were the late 1970s, when 450 found work there. It was decided early this year at the company's headquarters in Cincinnati that the plant would be closed. Also this date: Mike Conners, manager of the Sky City department store in Oxford's Blue Pond Plaza, has been honored as the Oxford Jaycee Outstanding Young Man of the Year. Noted as Jaycee "men of the year" were Mike Brady, an Oxford policeman; Danny Williamson, owner of Butenschon Drugs; Rodney Gilmore, evangelist; and Merle Hynes Jr., Oxford Middle School teacher.

On May 16 in 1866 — Congress authorized minting of the first 5-cent piece, also known as the "Shield nickel."

1868 — The Senate failed by one vote to convict President Andrew Johnson as it took its first ballot on the 11 articles of impeachment against him.

1929 — The first Academy Awards were presented during a banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The movie Wings won "best production," while Emil Jannings and Janet Gaynor were named best actor and best actress.

1939 — The government began its first food stamp program in Rochester, N.Y.

1984 — Comedian Andy Kaufman died in Los Angeles at age 35.
