June 17, 1934, in The Star: In an advertisement the 10th Street Taxi Company warns young bucks of the city that the men enrolled at R.O.T.C. camp at Fort McClellan are their competition for the attention of local pretty girls. The ad says the way a fellow can impress a young lady, thus distracting her from the attentions of those Army rascals, is to "Take her places — to dinner — the show — in a 10th St. Taxi."
Also this date: Alabama license plates that go on sale this October 1 will be deep green with white figures, it was announced today. Orders have already been placed to have more than 270,000 tags manufactured at Kilby Prison.
Additionally: The movie These Thirty Years, featuring an automotive theme in the plot, will be played at the open-air showing of Ford automobiles and trucks currently taking place at 16th Street and Quintard Avenue, on the campus of Anniston High School.
June 17, 1984, in The Star: The story of Kenneth Bice, a 1963 graduate of Anniston High School, is the story of a sharp young telephone company worker who took a technological leap of faith after new rulings allowed other long-distance telephone companies to exist outside of AT&T's control. Six years ago he parlayed an initial investment of $16,000 into two separate companies generating today nearly $2 million in annual sales. Telephone Communications Inc. sells, installs and services equipment, while TelNet resells long-distance service to around 500 business customers.
Also this date: Being constructed in the Kmart parking lot at Blue Mountain Road is a Del Taco fast-food restaurant. The area of construction is owned by Jack Suggs, who leased the property to a company several years ago for a period of 30 years.
