Nov. 6, 1934, in The Star: At a Methodist Church conference in south Anniston today, Dr. S. N. Reid of New Hope Baptist Church in Hobson City discussed his recently published book, The Home Manual. According to the brief article, "The Home Manual, containing 'rules, customs and laws governing the well regulated home,' was written in the interest of colored home life in the South." Also this date: The young people of Weaver Baptist Church will present The Clay's the Thing, a three-act comedy, at Weaver Junior High School this Friday night.

Nov. 6, 1984, in The Star: "As Ralph Bradford stated in the Oct. 30 issue of this paper, the location of a school is immaterial when half of our black students can't compete for today's or tomorrow's jobs," writes Barbara Rigsby Boyd in a letter to Speak Out regarding education in Anniston. Boyd, who was ranked number one in the Class of 1954 at Cobb High School, notes that while she's sometimes been labeled "white-oriented," her roots go deep into Anniston's history. Her grandfather, Dock Rigsby, was a chauffeur for one of the city's founding fathers. Also this date: An advertisement states that Anniston Safe & Lock and Ron's Smoke Shop, with the same phone number, are now located at 13 E. 13th St., Anniston.

1860 — Former Illinois Congressman Abraham Lincoln defeated three other candidates for the presidency: John Breckinridge, John Bell and Stephen Douglas.
1861 — Confederate President Jefferson Davis was elected to a six-year term of office.
1893 — Composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky died in St. Petersburg, Russia, at age 53.
1900 — President William McKinley was re-elected, beating Democrat William Jennings Bryan.
1934 — Nebraska voters approved a constitutional amendment which dissolved their two-chamber legislature in favor of a nonpartisan, single legislative body (or "unicameral"), which was implemented in 1937.
