Nov. 22, 1934, in The Star: Hugh D. Merrill, lieutenant governor of Alabama, yesterday was unanimously elected president of his hometown Anniston Kiwanis Club for the term that starts Jan. 1. Also this date: With the shock of Depression and the measures needed for recovery over, big business interests are fighting against the regulations that made the latter possible, we're told in separate wire stories. Texas oil producers are challenging the validity of the National Industrial Recovery Act, while utility companies are planning to spend more than $25 million in a gigantic advertising campaign to discredit and disparage such projects as those for TVA power development.

Nov. 22, 1984, in The Star: A newborn baby girl who was discovered in a box outdoors at the Downtowner motel in Anniston last month is still in the care of a foster family while the county Department of Pensions and Security completes the necessary legal steps to place the child for adoption. Neither police nor social workers have been able to identify, let alone find, the parents responsible for bringing the child into the world and then, presumably, abandoning her on Oct. 20. Also this date: Advertisements are generally more interesting than the news stories in this Thanksgiving Day issue. The Strawberry Patch (903 Noble St.), the Honeycomb Shop (1125 Noble St.), Primitive Pineapple (212 E. 15th St.) and The Keeping Room (in the old DeArmanville post office) are just a few of the smaller boutique-type shops joining the big boys in the column-inch lineup.
