I never cease to be amazed at politics concerning gambling in Alabama. First, David Barber, head of the state’s anti-gambling task force, resigned after being caught gambling and winning thousands in Mississippi. Now, his replacement, John Tyson, has been exposed for taking thousands of dollars from gambling sources. Will he resign?

Gov. Bob Riley says gambling is illegal in Alabama. Attorney General Troy King says not so. Some judges throughout Alabama say it is OK. Some say if you get caught playing bingo, you go to jail.

One would think that legislators could fix this problem. Whether one is for or against gambling, once and for all let the voters decide statewide whether to legalize gambling, authorizing anyone who can afford the license fee to have a casino or bingo parlor, or outlaw it for all. Authorizing a select few to become rich is wrong. Alabamians are intelligent. Politicians place trust in the voters to get elected but don’t think they have the sense to vote for or against gambling.

I think on election day, you will know how the citizens feel about the present leadership in Montgomery.
