Two men died this evening after being hit by a vehicle while standing on the side of U.S. 431 near the Big Oak community.
Patrick Hicks, 40, of Glencoe, and Charles Avery, 50, of Weaver, were outside a vehicle pulled over to the side in the southbound lane when they were struck from behind, said Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown.
The hazard lights for the vehicle parked on the side of the road were on at the time of the accident, which happened at about 5:15 p.m., Brown said.
One of the men was employed at nearby Laser Fabrication and Machine Co., Brown said. It was unknown whether he was a passenger in the vehicle, or if he was helping the driver.
The driver who hit the two men was taken to Regional Medical Center, but did not seem to have life-threatening injuries, Brown said. His name was not available at press time.
