Alabama State Troopers say a sleeping driver may have caused a Thursday evening crash that killed two men standing on the side of U.S. 431.
Patrick Ray Hicks, 39, of Glencoe, and Charles Marshall Avery, 50, of Weaver, died after being hit by a trailer struck by another vehicle about three miles south of Glencoe, according to Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown. The crash took place at about 5:15 p.m., Brown said.
The vehicle that caused the crash, a 2000 Mitsubishi Diamante driven by John Robert Martinez, 25, of Albertville, left the roadway and hit the trailer, which was attached to a 1989 Jeep Cherokee parked on the shoulder of the southbound lane, according to Trooper Chad Joiner, spokesman for the troopers’ post in Jacksonville.
Hicks and Avery were standing outside the Jeep Cherokee, and were hit by the trailer, Joiner said. Both were pronounced dead on the scene, Brown said.
Initial investigations indicate Martinez fell asleep while driving, causing him to drive off of the roadway, according to a press release from the troopers. The crash is still under investigation.
Martinez was transported to Regional Medical Center where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Brown said.
