Alabama State Troopers say a sleeping driver may have caused a Thursday evening crash that killed two men standing on the side of U.S. 431.

Patrick Ray Hicks, 39, of Glencoe, and Charles Marshall Avery, 50, of Weaver, died after being hit by a trailer struck by another vehicle about three miles south of Glencoe, according to Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown. The crash took place at about 5:15 p.m., Brown said.

The vehicle that caused the crash, a 2000 Mitsubishi Diamante driven by John Robert Martinez, 25, of Albertville, left the roadway and hit the trailer, which was attached to a 1989 Jeep Cherokee parked on the shoulder of the southbound lane, according to Trooper Chad Joiner, spokesman for the troopers’ post in Jacksonville.

Hicks and Avery were standing outside the Jeep Cherokee, and were hit by the trailer, Joiner said. Both were pronounced dead on the scene, Brown said.

Initial investigations indicate Martinez fell asleep while driving, causing him to drive off of the roadway, according to a press release from the troopers. The crash is still under investigation.

Martinez was transported to Regional Medical Center where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Brown said.

So sorry for the loss to these families. If i read it correctly the driver went to sleep and if he was not drinking and he just went to sleep it was an accident. I would not wish my worst enemy to burn in hell for anything. But i understand your anger.

1st of all to the families of these gentleman, I am sorry for your loss and wish you all the best in this difficult time. I wonder if Mr. Martinez even with an americanized first & middle name is illegal or had a license and insurance. I hope this is not the case for all that are involved. Best wishes to the families of all people involved. The families of the gentleman that lost their lives I hope that a strong support group and their families will help them through this most difficult of times.

Patrick was our best friend's son. We are so sad about him passing away and to all his family. Also, to the Avery family. We Pray for each one and hope justice is done about the one who did this. Patrick was a young man willing to help people and will be greatly missed!
