Today in history The Star's Bill Edwards takes a look back at this date in history. 1810 Bogota, the capital of Nueva Granada (present-day Colombia), declared independence from Spanish rule.

July 20, 1935, in The Star: There will be no services at First Methodist Church tomorrow morning because the pastor, Dr. W. G. Henry, is absent due to being on vacation. The church sanctuary is therefore being redecorated at this time. Also this date: A regular wire-service column of celebrity and cosmopolitan news, called “In New York,” makes reference to Burgess Meredith as “easily the most outstanding of Broadway’s young dramatic stars.” [Some 30 years later, of course, he would portray The Penguin on the Batman TV series.]

July 20, 1985, in The Star: An interview with Maudie M. Smith of Munford produces a sweet story as the 81-year-old talks about her 60 years (1921-’81) teaching Sunday school at Oak Grove Baptist Church. “Aunt Maude,” as she’s called, said the main difference between teaching Sunday school way back then and now is the disposition of the children. “I don’t know if they was better raised or what. They were real humble. If you would scold them, they’d cry,” she said.
