Make This: Repurposing family heirlooms keeps the past alive
One of the biggest hauls I got from my grandma was her collection of hand-embroidered pillowcases. Once I saw them, I knew I’d never actually use them as pillowcases. These aren’t just pillowcases, they are works of art.

‘Peculiar Possessions’ puts unusual items on display
Most people probably think that smartphones or tablets are the ultimate multi-tasking devices. That may be true, for the 21st century, at least. But for a look at how multi-tasking was done hundreds of years ago, look no further than the Indian combo weapon — now on display at the Berman Museum of World History — which incorporates a sword, an 8-inch shield, a single-shot percussion-cap pistol, a 12-inch dagger and two secret compartments for holding jewels and poison.

Remembering the Storm of the Century
It turns out that snow isn’t the only thing we remember about the Blizzard of ’93, the record-breaking storm that dumped more than a foot of snow across Alabama — and 25 other states — 20 years ago on March 13.

Slow cooker saves time and cleanup on everything from meatballs to pork chops
While I love my stand mixer, my food processor and my bread machine, the small appliance that gets used most in my kitchen is my slow cooker. There’s nothing much more satisfying than coming home after work to the smell of a cooked dinner. Combined with meal planning and once-weekly food prep — I’ve been chopping my vegetables for the week on Sundays, so all I have to do each day is the actual cooking — using the slow cooker can be a real time saver. It can save you time spent cleaning too, since just about every slow cooker recipe is a one-dish meal.

Make This! Repair guide to my heart
When you own an older house, like I do, it’s a love-hate relationship. I love the hardwood floors and the craftsman-style woodwork, the built-in bookcase and the beautiful original glass light fixtures. I hate the drafty windows, the un-insulated laundry room (brrr!!!) and the shower, which works at full pressure only sometimes.

Unwinding: Christian labyrinths offer time for meditation, reflection
Most people wouldn’t expect to find inner peace in the middle of an asphalt parking lot, but that’s just the intention of the labyrinth at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Anniston. There, one can walk the deceptively long path and pray, meditate or just enjoy the quiet.

Julia Segars has learned to recognize how the Lord works in her life — “through convergences of people, experiences and ideas,” the vice president of the eastern division of Alabama Power explained in an email. Through a seemingly chance encounter, she became the artist of a new mural in the children’s nursery at First Missionary Baptist Church in Anniston. “I ... find painting a spiritual endeavor, as it frees me from distractions and opens my mind to the voice of God in a way that nothing else does,” Segars wrote.
