Jim Gunnells has found a love in his second career as an acute care practitioner.

“I don’t look at this as a job. It’s a career,” he said. “I know this is where God has me.”

Gunnells, who previously worked in banking, returned to his love of medicine 12 years ago, working in emergency rooms and providing critical care in Birmingham and Wedowee. But nine months ago, Gunnells returned to Calhoun County, where he was born and raised, to help lead The Oxford Clinic.

At the clinic, Gunnells provides primary care for patients, helping treat everything from the common cold to minor injuries to chronic illnesses. And he said he loves working with his patients.

“I think once you’ve found your calling, you’re content and happy in your environment,” he said.

But Gunnells doesn’t think he’s all that different from other care providers in town.

“I think we’re all concerned about our patients,” he said. “I don’t see myself as being extraordinary in any way.”

Gunnells, though, has an enthusiasm for his work that comes through the moment you meet him.

“I think what’s important as far, as what I do now,” he said, “is the desire to help people, to care for people.”
