Mayor Leon Smith recently signed a proclamation declaring Nov. 17 as ‘Driver Safety Day’ in the city of Oxford. The date coincides with Oxford Public Library hosting a one-day AARP driver safety class that will be free for any active military member, as well as any veteran of any U.S. armed forces, spouse/partner, widow(er) and children.

The free classroom offer is part of AARP’s national program during November to recognize and thank military veterans for their service. During November, those eligible may also take the online course for 50 percent off.

Those not eligible for the veteran offer may take this class at the regular cost of $14 or $12 for current AARP members.

The class runs from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. with a break for lunch. The course is held entirely in the classroom with no tests. Course completion may qualify drivers age 55 or older for an insurance discount good for three years in Alabama. Drivers must retake the class to continue their discount.

The AARP driver safety course helps keep experienced drivers sharp by reviewing rules of the road, including recent changes to laws in Alabama. The course also teaches defensive driving techniques to accommodate for changes in flexibility, vision, hearing and reaction time. The course also covers changes in vehicles and how to operate more safely in Saturday’s increasingly challenging driving environment.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged due to limited class size. Registration will be first-come, first-served. To register call 256-294-2301. Call 888-227-7669 or contact Dr. Jim Williams at 256-268-5286 or email jw_aarp_dsp@bellsouth.net for more information.
