Winter is for wine lovers

If you’ve been waiting for the release of this season’s Beaujolais Nouveau, you’re in luck. The popular wine, which is light- to medium-bodied with red berry and cherry fruit flavors, is a Thanksgiving favorite for many because it’s very approachable for all wine drinkers, says Terry Pascal of the Wine Cellar in Anniston. The Wine Cellar has a limited amount of bottles for $11.99 (and they are open until 6 p.m. today), and it’s also available at Winn-Dixie.

In other wine news, Tyson’s Fine Wine and Things will open for three Sundays in December for “Sip & Shop.” Customers can come in and browse through the stores gift items and sample food and wine that is available to be packaged into gift baskets. The store will be open for Sip & Shop Dec. 8, Dec. 15 and Dec. 22 from 2-6 p.m.

Feasting out tomorrow? You’re not alone

While many families will gather around the dining room table tomorrow for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, according to a recent study by the National Restaurant Association, nearly 15 million people will venture outside the kitchen for their turkey and dressing this year. If you’re one of those planning to visit a restaurant for Thanksgiving this year, here are a few local options:

• The Peerless Grille and Saloon in downtown Anniston will be open at 4 p.m. The regular menu will be available as well as a special Thanksgiving menu, and the bar will have live music beginning at 8:30 p.m. 256-237-1899

• Garfrerick’s Café in Oxford still has a few spots available for its Thanksgiving Day lunch buffet seatings at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The special menu features oven-roasted turkey, holiday ham with pineapple sauce and roast leg of lamb with lamb jus, as well as a large selection of gourmet sides and desserts. The cost is $24 a person. A selection of beers, wines and cocktails will be available for $3-$10. Reservations are required. 256-831-0044.

• Western Sizzlin in Oxford will be open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. featuring a Thanksgiving buffet feast as well as full salad bar and regular menu. 256-835-2500

• Golden Corral in Oxford will be open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. featuring a Thanksgiving dinner buffet that will include traditional holiday selections plus steak and shrimp. 256-241-9282
