I can't understand the reaction of Jacksonville State athletics director Warren Koegel when he was approached Thursday about the report of Tennessee-Chattanooga starting a four-year football series with the Gamecocks starting next year.

Certainly, the deal has a hitch from JSU’s point of view – the first two games of that potential series are at Chattanooga. But for all the trouble the Gamecocks say they're having finding games to fill their 2014 schedule, you'd think their administrators would welcome a good regional rivalry for an extended period of time.

Instead, it was like somebody was giving away the first 10 plays the Gamecocks were going to run in today's game at Austin Peay.

Kudos to UTC officials for sharing with their local media the prospect of the games in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019. From the athletics director down, they seem excited to have the games.

If nothing else talking about it now creates some buzz among fans from both sides about the type of teams they're seeking to play.

Instead, Koegel seemed angered the news got out, saying strongly there were no signed contracts.

"If I don't want to sign it, I won't," he said.

Sure, there still might be some details to work out, but why would you not sign it? Just because somebody jumped the gun?

It sounds like a win-win deal. It's a good game, a good draw and four fewer games you have to find down the road.
