In The Star

Aug. 26, 1938, in The Star: A special delegation from Calhoun, Cleburne and Talladega counties is preparing to go to Montgomery next week to seek state assistance on a paved road project to the top of Alabama’s highest point, Mount Cheaha. Addressing the Anniston Kiwanis Club yesterday, Congressman Sam Hobbs said a stumbling block to improvement of the state park was caused by the state itself failing to live up to an agreement with the federal government with respect to road repairs in the park. Apparently money appropriated for the work by one Legislature was rescinded by a subsequent one. Also this date: With the Anniston City Council set to embark on a 40-block street-paving program, friction has arisen between the council and the city water department over who’s supposed to pay for replacement of water lines under the streets that are going to be paved.

Aug. 26, 1988, in The Star: Transforming the Calhoun County Courthouse into a home for district, family and circuit courts is going to require money not only for the adaptation and renovation of existing space, but also for new wiring, new plumbing and new heating and cooling — and the resources just don’t seem to be available for all of that work. Also this date: The U.S. Army Chemical School’s 30-classroom, $11 million academic building was dedicated at Fort McClellan this morning in a ceremony where Maj. Gen. Gerald Watson, post commander, was guest speaker. The new building is to be known as Sibert Hall, in memory of Gadsden native Maj. Gen. William Sibert, who in 1918 organized the Chemical Warfare Service in the Army Corps of Engineers and was its first leader. Members of the Sibert family attended the event.
