1620 Forty-one Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower, anchored off Massachusetts, signed a compact calling for a "body politick."

1831 Former slave Nat Turner, who had led a violent insurrection, was executed in Jerusalem, Va.

1889 Washington became the 42nd state.

1921 President Warren G. Harding dedicated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

1965 Rhodesia proclaimed its independence from Britain.

1972 The U.S. Army turned over its base at Long Binh to the South Vietnamese army, symbolizing the end of direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War.

1992 The Church of England voted to ordain women as priests.

1998 Israel's Cabinet narrowly ratified a land-for-peace agreement with the Palestinians.

2004 Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat died in Paris at age 75.

Nov. 11, 1938, in The Star: The celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Battle of Talladega climaxed with a re-enactment of the clash between Gen. Andrew Jackson’s Tennessee militia and the Red Sticks faction of the Creek tribe of Native Americans. The three-day anniversary event attracted thousands of attendants. Also on this date: Anniston’s poor financial condition drove down bids on $94,000 worth of public school bond’s at today’s City Council meeting.

Nov. 11, 1988, in The Star: The mayors of Ashland and Lineville recently received letters from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management saying that it will now be illegal for the cities to dump their garbage at the Acmar Coal Company landfill in St. Clair County. The cities are now taking their trash to the Tallassee Waste Disposal Center. Also on this date: One of Anniston’s two new trolleys has arrived. City leaders are waiting to unveil the two new vehicles at a Nov. 20 grand opening event to announce the expansion of The Model City’s public transit system.
