Police took a Saks man into protective custody Friday afternoon after he had threatened to kill himself, according to an officer at the scene.

Officers waited outside a home on West 53rd Street, just north of U.S. 431 along Saks Road, for nearly an hour Friday before forcing their way inside and bringing a man out in handcuffs.

Anniston police initially had responded to a dispatch call from two woman relatives of the man who also lived at the home, according to Anniston police Sgt. Josh Doggrell. No one was hurt in the incident, he said.

Anniston police, along with Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Anniston firefighters, had blocked the road by 2 p.m. Doggrell said a negotiator with the Special Response Team had talked to the man by phone to try to get him to come outside. At about 2:40 p.m., officers forced their way into a home on the street. They emerged a few minutes later escorting a handcuffed man wearing jeans and a gray T-shirt.

Doggrell said the man had not been charged with a crime.

“We were here for the peace and safety of the neighborhood,” Doggrell said. “If he had carried out some of the stuff he threatened, it would have disrupted the peace and safety.”

Doggrell said he could not elaborate on what the threats might have been, and police were still investigating the incident. The two women at the house who were removed from the scene were questioned and released Friday afternoon, he said.

Doggrell said the man might have had a history of mental problems and officers were seeking to get him help.
