Davis’ wife, meanwhile, is being held at the Randolph County Jail. According to a jail employee, Felecia Davis, 42, was arrested Saturday. She has not been officially charged by the Alabama Bureau of Investigations, the employee said.
Benny Davis was in the Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit at UAB Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said today.
Ashland Mayor Larry Fetner said Davis was shot between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Saturday. He declined to give the location of the shooting, or any other circumstances surrounding the incident, deferring all questions to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, which is looking into the shooting. Ashland police also referred all questions to ABI. Attempts this afternoon to reach several ABI officials were unsuccessful.
Fetner said ABI is handling the investigation and to his knowledge no one has been arrested yet.
“We’re all waiting on a press release from ABI,” Fetner said.
Fetner said the bullet hit Davis in the side and broke one of his ribs. Davis underwent surgery this weekend to repair his colon; the bullet is still lodged in the police chief’s back, Fetner said. The mayor said doctors were not concerned with the bullet’s location at this time.
Fetner said he spent Sunday afternoon in the hospital with Davis’ family, and reported Davis is in critical condition, but stable.
“Doctors are very optimistic and so far any reports we’ve heard have been good,” Fetner said.
