"(Tuesday night) was the most non-competitive game we have played all year," Auburn coach John Pawlowski said. "Offensively we didn't compete at the plate. We competed in spots on the mound but I am just disappointed in our effort today. We didn't do anything today that would give us even a remote chance to win tonight. That falls squarely on everybody. Not one person, not one player but everybody has to take responsibility for this."
Samford's Stephen Ballard was 4-for-5, while Trey Hayes was 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run, driving in five runs.
Samford's Kyle Putkonen (3-2) earned the winSamford (15-26) tagged Auburn starter Paul Burnside (1-3) for four runs on seven hits and three walks in 41/3 innings.
Hunter Morris sent a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right to make it 4-2 in the sixth, but that was the last hit Auburn (25-16) recorded.
Joseph Sanders was hit in the face in the first inning and left the game with a possible season-ending injury.
"Joe's jaw, I am not really sure where it is broke, but he is going to have to have surgery," Pawlowski said.
National invitation
AUBURN — Hunter Morris has been extended and accepted an invitation to the 2009 USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., June 15-24.
Morris is one of five players who played on last summer's gold medal winning team to be on the list of 17 initial invitees to the trials.
Morris hit .270 in 19 games for USA Baseball last year, collecting 10 hits in 37 at bats with a double, three home runs and nine RBI. He finished the summer by driving in the winning run in the 12th-inning in the FISU World Championships as the squad completed an undefeated run over the summer, finishing the year 24-0.
This season Morris is hitting .288 with five doubles and nine home runs, driving in 24 RBI while also scoring 24 runs.
