I was very disappointed to read about the tuition increase at Jacksonville State University that the board of trustees has approved. The $150 fee that will face each student because President Bill Meehan said that “everyone else seems to be doing it, too” is crazy. That seems like a fairly ridiculous reason to charge students who are probably already struggling to pay tuition.
Five tuition increases in five years just for employee pay raises? There are many of us who have not had a pay raise in several years, and we have to just deal with it. Maybe everyone should just deal with it and students won’t have to be forced to take fewer classes because they can’t afford more. Or, worse yet, we could drop out all together.
We talk about the importance of education in this country, but we make it impossible for normal working people to afford it. It must not be that important. Maybe JSU can change its name from “Friendliest Campus in the South” to “The Greediest Campus in the South.” Seems to me that JSU is sending the wrong message to those who desire higher education.
