According to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, “Alabama has had more health regulations in place to protect a cat or dog at a veterinary clinic than it does for a woman receiving an abortion.” As someone who believes in the right to life, we have to remember that sometimes there are two victims in the case of an abortion, not just the baby whose life is being taken. I appreciate Gov. Robert Bentley, the House and Senate leadership and all the members of the Legislature that supported this legislation.
When we go to a hospital or local medical center, we expect those facilities and their physicians to adhere to high safety and medical standards. While we might regret that any mother would choose to end the life of her unborn baby, we should certainly expect that rules should be in place to provide for the basic medical safety of the woman involved in the procedure. I would hope we can all agree that an abortion clinic should meet the highest safety standards in our state.
