It’ll be a remarkable feat: 34 years after it began, this once-meager golf tournament is still rolling on, making life a little easier for many Calhoun County charities.
(Though they’re not related, it’s easy to consider the Sunny King and the Woodstock 5K, the Anniston-based road race, similar events in style and substance. This year will mark the 32nd Woodstock, which also donates to charities.)
These events aren’t merely this county’s mini-versions of the Masters or the Olympics. They are social events that show off the county’s best traits, invite visitors and play a role in improving the lives of the less fortunate. Their worth was proven long ago.
Whether the Sunny King, the Woostock or the cycling events the county hosts each spring, these events are monsters to organize. Volunteers work overtime. Sponsors are vital. Hour upon hour go into their planning.
More than anything, they’re survivors.
Through changing times and economic downturns, the Sunny King has remained a popular weekend on the Calhoun County calendar. There’s no reason to think its momentum will slow down in the years to come.
