Local residents can don their red, white and blue for an array of activities next week, including pool parties, pet shows, rides, games, street dances and, of course, fireworks.
Monday:
Jacksonville
• “Splish-splash” pool party 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Jacksonville Community Center Pool. $1 admission charge.
• Bark in the Park, 6 p.m., Frog-Town Soccer Complex on Alexandria Road. Families can enter dogs in a show with awards for best trick, cutest dog, ugliest dog, best dressed, best looking male, prettiest female, most outspoken, most bashful and friendliest dog. Entry fee: can or bag of dog food to be donated to the local Humane Society.
Tuesday:
Jacksonville
• Toddler Challenge, 6 p.m., Golden Eagle Stadium, Jacksonville High School, Olympic-style events for children ages 2-5. $5 entry fee per child.
• JaxFest 2012, family entertainment, music and fireworks, beginning 7 p.m., fireworks 9 p.m. Golden Eagle Stadium, Jacksonville High School. Attendees encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Wedowee
• Wedowee Street dance, at KJ’s Exxon at 1308 Main St.
5 p.m. - Street dance with live music, food vendors, dunking booth, bounce castle, inflatable slide.
9 p.m. - Fireworks
Wednesday:
Oxford
• Freedom Festival, all day, Oxford Lake Park
8 a.m. - “Around the lake rumble” for seniors.
9 a.m. – Children’s patriotic costumes parade (registration 8:30 at baseball field).
9:30 a.m. - Bicycle & tricycle races.
9:45 a.m. - Pet show, beside swimming pool .
Noon - Free paddle boats on the lake at noon.
1 p.m. - Swimming race at Oxford Lake Pool
9 p.m. - Fireworks
Heflin
• Salute to America Celebration, all evening, McIntyre Park.
4:30 p.m. - Duck derby.
5 p.m. - Free activities, incl. sand castle construction, disc golf competition, and bouncing structures begin at
5:30 p.m. - Bingo, sack races and other games
Music begins at 5 p.m., with the following acts playing at the top of each hour: Josh and Stewart, John Howle and the Tropical Breeze Steel Band. Food vendors will be set up, but picnics are welcome.
The Heflin Fire Department will sponsor a fireworks display at dark.
Wedowee
• Foster’s Crossroad Street Dance, DP Oil on U.S. 431.
5 p.m. - Food, games, rides, live music, dunking booth, dirt track racing. A 7-in-1 smoker, gift certificates and other prizes will be raffled.
Names and photographs of local military personnel will be posted on an honor wall. All proceeds to help needy families in county.
11 p.m. - Fireworks
• Boat parade, Lakeside Marina, 10 a.m.
