The 2012 election cycle has been a long, drawn-out affair. It doesn’t end until Nov. 6 when we vote for president. Nevertheless, today’s vote is important to many people and most municipalities in Calhoun County.

On the ballot are runoff candidates for two City Council wards in Anniston, the mayoral races in Hobson City and Ohatchee and a slew of open seats in Piedmont, for mayor and three City Council spots. There’s a runoff for the final City Council position in Jacksonville, as well.

The polls have opened several times already in 2012. Last month, Alabamians were asked to cast ballots on a constitutional amendment important to the state’s fiscal future. If voters have Election Year burnout, we understand.

That said, we encourage eligible voters to take part in today’s elections. Calhoun County is selecting its leaders for the next four years. Your votes count.

The polls are open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
