For residents with a vision of the leader Anniston’s next schools superintendent should be, Tuesday's One City, One Vision meeting is an opportunity to share those ideas.

Representatives from BWP & Associates, the consulting firm handling the superintendent search for the Board of Education, want community input as the team builds a leadership profile for the position and commences the search. BWP’s search team will attend the 6 p.m. meeting at Hodges Community Center in Golden Springs to pass out surveys for residents to fill out and return at the meeting or send in later, according to school board president Donna Ross.

“It’s crucial to know what the community is looking for,” Ross said. “I know what I’m looking for in a school leader but it might not be the same as my neighbor down the street.”

The input from the community, Ross said, will help members of the search committee have a better idea of the type of leaders who will fit well in the Anniston City Schools.

“If the community has one expectation, and we hire a leader who’s going in a different direction, then we haven’t met the expectation of the community, and we’re going to have a lot of dissatisfaction,” she said.

The search committee plans to begin advertising for the position next month. Under a timeline for the search adopted by the school board, consultants should have a list of finalists for the board by Dec. 5. School officials plan to name a superintendent by Jan. 17, with the new district leader beginning by Feb. 18. Superintendent Joan Frazier is set to retire at the end of June.

Those who can’t make tonight’s meeting can fill out an online survey that asks about qualities and qualifications of the superintendent, as well as about the biggest strengths and challenges for the city’s school district. The survey, which can be found on the district’s website at, will be available until Oct. 4.
