This past weekend I experienced my first Woodstock. We have lived here for around 6 years and I had never made it over to the event. I had no idea it was so involved or that big! I arrived on Friday night to pick up my registration packet and t-shirt. It wasn't really a t-shirt, it was a 'sweat wicking' pale green shirt with vendors on the back. (Think NASCAR) And I liked it! Inside the registration packet were flyers to other races, coupons, my number (which in running world is called a 'bibb'), and a tab in which I would wrap around my shoe laces and we would know the precise second I started and finished the race. Who knew this was so high tech! The next morning I arrived early so I could park in the Anniston High School parking lot. I thought I was early arriving at 6:30 for a 7:30 race- not so. I had to park down 11th street and walk over. The place was crawling with people who looked to be participants, onlookers, and supporters. As race time drew near I found myself corralled with others who thought they would finish the race between 20:00 and 25:00 minutes. At this point I had only run one other 5k and I finished with in that time before, so why not! I purposely had not run the course before that morning because I wanted new stuff to look at, thought it might help me stay focused or something. People were lined up down the course cheering us on the whole way. The Anniston High School football players were at the last curve- weren't they supposed to be practicing for the upcoming season? I think it is awesome they supported us runners. Not going to drag this out much longer. I finished with a time of 24:40 which landed me 4th in my age group. I was pretty pleased. It was hot. Overall I thought it was a well planned event. I have only heard good things since. Congrats to the Anniston Runners Club for a job well done.
