The widening of Bynum Boulevard from two lanes to three isn’t the answer to the traffic problems at Anniston Army Depot. Those who think because we lost Fort McClellan that we can’t possibly lose the depot, think again. This road to the depot is substandard. Adding a turn lane is not going to improve this road.

When the Western Bypass was constructed, it did just that — bypass the largest employer in Calhoun County. This is the only and most important part of Alabama 202 that wasn’t modified. Instead, it ended up in court with the blessing of the legislative delegation. The reason the state gave for changing the direction of Alabama 202 was the cemetery. This is holy ground, not a place for road expansion.

Put a four-lane where it was originally planned. Without this, the traffic flow and safety will never improve. Honda, Bridgewater, Kronospan and the new industrial park use this road.

I’m told that the only way this bad plan can be stopped since this is a city road is for the mayor to call the governor. Oxford, it’s your turn to let everyone know that we expect more than a turn lane for Anniston Army Depot.
