Officials with the governor’s office are interviewing candidates for the open seat on the Calhoun County Commission, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Jeremy King, deputy communications director for Gov. Robert Bentley, said the governor and his staff are considering four candidates for the District 3 commission seat, vacated earlier this month by Eli Henderson.

“We have a strong set of candidates,” King said, noting the interviews were taking place Wednesday and today. “A lot of times this can be a difficult decision to make.”

Because the interview process is ongoing, King said he could not release the names of the candidates.

An announcement for the new commissioner is expected by the middle of next week.

“The bottom line is, our staff looks for a candidate who can uphold the oath of the office to the best of his ability for the people in his district,” he said.

Today the Calhoun County Commission will meet for the first time in 18 years without Henderson as a member.

The five-time elected commission member from District 3 was sworn in as Calhoun County’s circuit clerk earlier this month, vacating the seat on the commission he’s held since 1994.

Calhoun County Administrator Ken Joiner said neither he nor the commission had heard names of the candidates, or when the position might be filled.

“There’s no telling,” Joiner said. “Sometime an announcement comes in a couple of days, and sometimes it’s a month. We really have no way of knowing, that’s up to him and his staff.”

District 3 encompasses most of the western portion of the county, including the towns of Ohatchee and Hobson City and parts of Oxford.

The commission is expected to recognize Henderson at the meeting today for his years of service.
