Last Friday in Jefferson County, a fight between two brothers got out of hand and neighbors called the police. When the officers arrived, they found 17 bags of marijuana, digital scales for weighing drugs and nine guns — including four assault-type rifles and an Uzi with a silencer.

These were not guns for hunting.

These were not guns for skeet shooting.

These were not guns for target practice.

These were not guns for protecting home and family from people like the ones who owned these guns.

These were guns designed to kill and/or intimidate innocent people or rivals who were involved in the same business in which the accused were allegedly involved.

The brothers were arrested and charged with third-degree domestic violence, unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. They also were charged with first-degree receiving of stolen property because one of the guns had been stolen.

That was the only gun-related charge, according to the Birmingham News.

Apparently, possession of weapons with no value to sportsmen, weapons that are only designed to kill or maim someone else — in this case, other criminals or officers of the law who are sworn to protect the public — is just fine in Alabama.
