Reputable studies have shown that to be the case for years, but this study -- by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco -- combines the findings of multiple previous surveys to create a larger, more definitive pool of data. The UC San Francisco data also exposed a significant difference between men and women in the results.

"People who have ready access to a firearm are almost twice as likely to be killed and three times likelier to commit suicide than those without a gun available in the home or from a neighbor or friend."
