If worthy Auburn or Alabama teams wind up on the outside looking in at the four-team college football playoff when it begins next year, you might be able to blame Condoleezza Rice.

Yes, that Condoleezza Rice.

According to the Associated Press, the Alabamian, former secretary of state and former national security advisor is expected to be named to the selection committee for the playoff. The committee's roster hasn't been publicly named, but it is expected to be made up of people directly involved in the game -- retired coaches and athletics directors, for instance.

As you can imagine, the apparent selection of someone who has never worked full-time in college athletics has created a mild stir. Cecil Hurt, sports editor of The Tuscaloosa News, tweeted Friday, "I like Condi Rice, but do I really believe she spent last night watching Texas-Iowa State and Utah-UCLA?" On USA Today, a writer has already posted a column in favor of Rice's selection.

Whoever is named to this committee will be under unholy pressure, for sure.
