According a worker with a tree company, a tree was leaning against three primary lines in woods adjoining the residential street. The lines were not all the way down, he said, but for him and his co-workers to remove the tree from the lines required Alabama Power to shut off power to the lines.
The affected lines are on the side of a wooded hill, making access difficult. During the 8 o'clock hour the tree company employees were waiting for the power company truck to arrive.
Neighborhoods in the dark included those of north Woodstock, Rocky Hollow, the East 15th Street hill, Marguerite and assorted side streets.
The traffic signal at 18th and Rocky Hollow wasn't working, so authorities placed stop signs at the intersection.
The gas station at 18th and Quintard was also noted to be in the dark.
It's thought that the power went off to the area at 2:45 p.m.
