On March 29 the Major General Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter 2632 of United Daughters of the Confederacy presented a World War II cross of military service to Chester M. Hughes. The ceremony was conducted by the chapter recorder of military service Jo Howard and chapter president Lynda Lowery. Hughes served aboard the USS Manning, U.S. Navy, during World War II. His great-grandfather George W. Hughes served in Company K 40th Regiment, Georgia Infantry during the War Between the States. The ceremony was held at the Hughes home in Heflin with several family members present.
