JACKSONVILLE — Rick Nold has a history of winning in Pete Mathews Coliseum. The fact that he is now employed by Auburn has not changed that.

Nold’s Auburn volleyball team swept Jacksonville State on Monday 25-19, 25-21, 25-9, giving Nold a win over the program he used to coach.

As for JSU, current coach Joseph Goodson said that playing “scrappy” has become the Gamecocks’ trademark. The problem is getting over that hump and into the win column.

“For us it’s about being patient,” said Goodson. “We play a point and we play a point, we’re doing good and then someone loses their patience.”

That loss of patience was evident after halftime. The Gamecocks had played the Tigers tough until the third set. That is when Auburn managed a huge 8-0 run that put the set and match out of reach.

“I think our girls just got a little bit tight and started to press a little bit,” said Goodson. “You go out there and try to make plays as opposed to just letting the game come to you then all of a sudden you’re playing catch up.”

It was Nold’s first trip back to JSU since he took over at Auburn in 2011. While there was plenty of people present happy to see him again, Nold said he was happy to see the development of some of those players that he recruited to JSU.

“I was proud of what I saw from them,” said Nold. “They were out there digging balls and being scrappy. That’s what I expect from them. They’re good kids, and I think they’ll do well this year.”

One of those players is senior Kelly Cole who led the Gamecocks with 12 digs. Cole said that playing against Nold was “a lot of fun” but it motivated her play harder.

“I kind of wanted to prove to him that hey, you shouldn’t have left,” she said.

Emily Rutherford with 11 kills and Abbey Heredia with 15 assists led the Gamecocks (2-6). Auburn improved to 7-1.
