Yes and no.
I am in the staff photo. Right-hand side, near the back, squint and you can see the top of my head.
And Friday was my last day as features editor of the Star. I’m going, but not very far.
This column will still be here, every Sunday, at least until my kids stop doing funny things.
I am now, instead, the editor of Northeast Alabama Living, a lifestyle magazine the newspaper will be publishing four times a year.
Warning: Shameless self-promotion ahead.Living magazine will showcase beautiful homes and gardens, fine food, art and music, local people of style and substance. And, since it’s me, there will be something funny in there somewhere.
The newspaper put out a pilot issue in the fall. If you’d like to see it, there’s a digital version on the Star’s website, AnnistonStar.com. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, look for the section called “Special Reports,” click on the photo that says “Northeast Alabama Fall Living.”
The next issue will be out in March. Watch the newspaper for more info on how to get a copy.
End shameless self-promotion.
The new features editor is Deirdre Long, who has already proven herself as deputy features editor and, before that, as editor of the Escapes section. She also writes a crafting column that appears on the back page of this section. I’m very much looking forward to reading her features sections.
The best part of my new job is that I am no longer a full-time employee. I get to work from home and set my own hours, just like I did when my kids were younger.
When I informed my children of this, their only comment was, “Does this mean you won’t be late picking us up from school every day?”
I think my husband is hoping the house might be a little cleaner.
As for me, I have spent the past week feeling excited and energized, but also sad and guilty and crazy. What am I thinking, giving up a full-time job in this economy?
I envy you people who have the strength to never second-guess a decision.
Things I’m going to do first:
2. Finish watching the final season of “Battlestar Galactica” on Netflix.
4. Replace the broken handle on my son’s toilet.
5. Finish reading “Cloud Atlas.”
6. Try on those boots I ordered from Zappos back in November.
7. Go back to that yoga class I quit three years ago.
