The Gen. William Henry Forney 468, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Anniston, recently awarded military service awards to three area veterans. The World War II Cross of Military Service and the Global War on Terror Military Service are awarded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to military personnel who are currently serving in the military or have been honorably discharged and have a Confederate ancestor who served honorably in the War Between the States.

Hugh Marion Hamilton, of Anniston, was awarded the Cross of Military Service No. 16568 for service in WWII. He served as a Carpenter’s Mate 3rd Class, 103rd Naval Construction Brigade, United States Navy. His Confederate ancestor and grandfather was Pvt. George Worth Hamilton, who served in Co, L, 10th Regiment, Alabama Calvary. Pvt. Hamilton was a prisoner of war from Dec 23, 1864 to June 13, 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.

Randi Lindsey Davis, of Anniston, was awarded the Cross of Military Service No. 3589 for service in the Vietnam conflict. Her served as Sergeant, Co. B, 554th engineer Battalion, United States Army. His confederate ancestor and great-great grandfather was Pvt. James Monroe Lindsey, who served in Co. C, 10th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He entered service Dec. 23, 1863 at Montgomery, Alabama and served until April 1865 when he was released at Burkesville Junction, Virginia.

William Jerome Johnson, of Ohatchee, was awarded the Military Service Cross No. 2050 for service in the Persian Gulf Conflict. He served as a Sergeant 1st Class, 194th Military Police Co., United States Army. His confederate ancestor and great-great grandfather was Pvt. James Mason Johnson, who served in Captain Scrogin’s Battery, Griffin Light Artillery from Georgia. He entered service May 7, 1862 at Griffin, Georgia and served until his discharge on May 7, 1865 at Griffin, Georgia.

President Helen M. Johnson of Anniston, Recorder of Military Service, Joyce M. La Taste of Oxford and Chaplain Linda Howard of Oxford presented the awards at the Anniston-Calhoun County Library.
