JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville State football team moved into the next phase of its season preparation Monday when it split its squad into a 60-man game-day roster and a 30-man developmental squad.

Two players from Calhoun County are among several first-year players on the list of 60 who will be working toward the Sept. 4 opener at Ole Miss — defensive lineman Shawn McAlister of Pleasant Valley and outside linebacker Brent Tolson of Anniston. Cherokee County’s Coty Blanchard is listed as the second quarterback behind junior Marques Ivory.

The hardest part of determining the depth chart involved the offensive line, where injuries have severely limited its ability to work. The three projected senior starters — Curt Porter, Tyler Ogletree and Justin Kay — all are listed at the top of the chart at their positions and are expected to be there on opening day.

“We got a chance to look at a lot of guys,” JSU coach Jack Crowe said. “I wish I could say there’s been somebody found … but we haven’t arrived at that. I guess we’re closer than not. Maybe it’s going to happen right through here in the next few days.

“You cannot be consistent offensively without being very consistent up there. We went from being a model of consistency in the spring to not knowing what to expect. … But we looked at a lot of different people on the offensive line. Nobody here can say they didn’t get a lot of snaps.”

The rest of the depth chart, Crowe said, looks “pretty much like we left it in the spring.”

The Gamecocks began their work on Ole Miss Monday morning. They are considering a combination of redshirting quarterback Steven Coates and receiver Rayce Whiddon to simulate Ole Miss quarterback and Oregon transfer Jeremiah Masoli.
