A man reportedly hit a 10-year-old boy with a stick Saturday evening in Anniston, sending the boy to hospital with injuries, police said.

The boy was playing with a friend on the 500 block of Front Street around 6:40 p.m. when he was approached by the suspect, according to Anniston police Capt. Allen George. George said the man was angry at the boy for stealing food and told him to leave. The victim returned to his own home, but later came back to play with his friend.

When the man saw the boy, he picked up a stick and hit the child in the hand, George said.

The suspect told police he only wanted to scare the child, the captain said.

The victim was treated at Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, George said.

George said Monday the incident was under investigation.

The suspect could be charged with felony second-degree assault.
