Pat Kirk, who is overseeing the demolition for Hale Building Company, said the concrete slab above the basement atop which the excavator was sitting caved in at around 9:30 a.m.
“It just sort of laid over a little bit. We’re just about to set it back up,” Kirk said by phone at 11:30 a.m. Friday. “It didn’t scare the operator and it didn’t hurt the machine. It just needs to be pulled back over.”
The old building at 1200 Gurnee Ave. is being razed to make way for a parking lot. Anniston police began last month moving into the department’s new facility, the Justin Sollohub Justice Center, which sits on the same block as the old building.
