A friend and I have visited Noccalula Falls in Gadsden several times throughout the past year. We love to view the falls and walk through the nature trails on the campground side of the falls — all free.

Also, we peeked in the windows of the lovely church chapel that faces the falls bridge and inside the cabins located several hundred feet behind the chapel. The well-decorated cabins were available for rent, as is the chapel, but no one was staying inside at the time.

We visited the campground lodge, where there was a nice couple waiting on their laundry. They told us they also had shower stalls for bathing. The campground’s playground is brand new, and the swimming pool sits just outside the lodge. The City of Gadsden is building the park area up gradually.

Noccalula Falls is a great way to spend a day, and even a large family can afford the entrance fees to many of the activities.

In the past year, I have visited the park with my grandchildren, especially during the holiday season when the park is decorated in thousands of Christmas lights for “Christmas at the Falls.” Even now, though, park officials make sure children have plenty to do, such as visit the animal habitat, ride a train and buy refreshments. There is also a nearby restaurant.

The rundown
