After months of delays, the Publix grocery at the Oxford Commons is set to have its grand opening next week.

A press release from Publix said the grocery store, first announced in 2011, will open its doors to customers Feb. 27. Oxford Mayor Leon Smith will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6:45 a.m. that day.

Brenda Reid, manager of media relations for Publix, said the Oxford store will feature an expanded model that combines natural and organic products and services with more traditional grocery items, making the new location unique among Publix stores in Alabama.

“In this country, people are increasingly trending toward going green,” Reid said. “This Oxford store is reflecting our new Publix model.”

Oxford’s Publix was set to open initially in fall of 2012, but construction problems, including poor weather, supply issues and a sinkhole near the site pushed the opening date first to December, and then into 2013.

“We’re looking forward to finally getting it open,” said Fred Denney, Oxford’s city project manager. “Just trying to make folks happy.”

The grocery store is the first business for the in-development Oxford Commons, which developers hope will entice more retail stores and restaurants to the area. So far only a Panera Bread has been announced, although Denney said he did not know when the café will open.
